The United Nations is set to release a report today that says the world is on track to miss its targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The report says that emissions need to be cut by 7.6 percent every year between 2020 and 2030 to keep the world from warming more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels. That's the target set by the Paris climate agreement. But the UN says current plans would only reduce emissions by about half that amount. The report says the world is not doing enough to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels or to invest in renewable energy. It also says the world needs to do more to protect forests and other natural ecosystems that help to store carbon dioxide.
