Biography of Bola Tinubu

Nigeria’s Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a man of many parts: a political leader, a businessman, and a philanthropist. He is also a master strategist, who has been instrumental in shaping the course of Nigerian politics over the past two decades.

Born in 1952 into a large family of Yoruba Muslims in the city of Lagos, Tinubu’s early life was shaped by the political turmoil of the times. His father was a prominent member of the opposition National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), and was jailed by the Nigerian government on several occasions.

This instilled in Tinubu a deep sense of justice and an unshakeable belief in the importance of democracy. After studying economics at the University of Lagos, he worked for a time as a banker in the United States.

Returning to Nigeria in the early 1980s, Tinubu became involved in the struggle against the military dictatorship
